Frequently Asked Questions
What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
As your doula, I offer comfort techniques, movement and positioning support, breathing and relaxation tools, and calm guidance through decision-making. I also support your birth partner in feeling grounded and involved.
The benefits of hiring a doula are evidence-based. Research shows that people who use a birth doula are:
28% less likely to have a caesarian section
31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin to speed up labor
9% less likely to use any pain medication
34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively
No matter how or where you give birth, having a doula by your side can help you feel more confident, more connected, and more in tune with your experience.
How is a doula different from a midwife or OB-GYN?
Midwives and OB-GYNs are medical providers. They monitor your health and your baby’s health, make diagnoses, and perform clinical tasks like cervical checks, fetal monitoring, and, catching your baby.
A doula provides non-clinical support. I focus on your comfort, mindset, movement, and emotional well-being throughout pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum period.
We work well together. As your medical provider ensures the health and safety of you and your baby, your doula ensures you feel seen, supported, and informed.
What kind of support do you offer during labor?
During labor, I offer continuous support from the moment you need me until you’re settled after birth. This includes:
Comfort measures (breathwork, counterpressure, position changes)
Movement techniques to encourage progress
Emotional reassurance for you and your partner
Help navigating choices and communicating with your birth team
Creating a calm, centered environment for birthing
What’s the role of my partner if we have a doula?
Your partner still plays a deeply meaningful role. You're a team, and I'm here to support both of you.
My presence allows your partner to be fully engaged without the pressure of remembering every technique or decision. I offer practical suggestions, reassurance, and ways your partner can support you physically and emotionally during labor. This can include coaching them through applying counterpressure, reminding them to take breaks, and helping them feel more confident in the moment.
Do you offer postpartum support?
Yes. Every birth package includes at least one in-home postpartum visit where we can reflect on your birth, process any emotions that may be coming up, and talk through newborn care, feeding, recovery, and how you're adjusting as a family. In addition to this visit, I offer continued support via text or email in those early weeks.
Additional postpartum sessions can be added if you're needing more hands-on or emotional support during this transition. We’ll make sure you’re not navigating this new season alone.
When should I hire a doula?
Most people get in touch during the second trimester, but it’s never too early or too late to connect.
I only take 2–3 clients per month to ensure I can offer each family the time, presence, and care they deserve. If you're considering doula support, I recommend reaching out sooner rather than later to confirm availability around your due date.
The earlier we begin, the more time we’ll have to build a relationship, explore your birth preferences, and prepare together. That said, if you're farther along in pregnancy, there's still so much we can do. Don't hesitate to reach out!
